Winter is now close at hand sending your chrysanthemum (know as ‘mums’ to everyone else) into hiding for the long cold winter. We have 7 steps that you can follow to winterize your mums, keeping them alive to enjoy next year.
- Plant into the ground or move container to sheltered area, such as by the house or garage.
- Leave stems on until mid spring.
- Protect with leaves, straw, or mulch.
- Water occasionally during winter on warmer days- especially important if no rain or snow.
- In April, prune stems to 3 inches above ground, you should start to see new green life under them.
- Water and feed during spring and summer months.
- To make nice, round plants for fall, pinch new growth until July 4.
